Finding A New Worship Center Home When You Move To A New City

Josephine Walker

Moving to a new city or town is one of life's many automatic resets. Not only do you have to adapt to a new home and place of work, but you also have to find a new worship center to call home. As a critical part of your life, the worship center you choose can affect your spiritual relationship, faith, and your ability to grow within your beliefs. It is important that you approach this task thoughtfully.

Forget About the Past

Do yourself a favor and forget about your past; more specifically, your last worship home. Not only are you at a different worship center than before, but you are in an entirely different city. The way the building looks, how their ministries operate, and even how the congregation interacts with one another is likely to be different.

The reality is that you may never find something that is 100% identical to what you had before, but it does not mean that you cannot find a new worship center that holds to your beliefs and envisions what you want in a religious environment.

Visit Regularly

You should never visit a worship center only one time and make a decision as to whether or not you want to become a member of the congregation or not. You should allow yourself to make an honest assessment, which can only be accomplished by visiting regularly, even it means visiting twice a month for four months, for instance.

Visiting often also gives you a chance to see how well the location of the worship center fits into your lifestyle. For instance, is it convenient from your home or place of work or is it in a part of town you are comfortable traveling to? All of these factors are important.

Be Active and Involved

Make sure that you do not merely sit on the sidelines. You should be as active and involved as you can be without committing to full membership. From religious study meetings to retreats to community outreach programs, the more involved you are, the more you have the chance to feel the pulse of the congregation, and the more you have the opportunity to discover how well you fit into the environment.

If you are interested in ministry, this process is also a helpful way to discover where you might serve best.

As you explore your options, do not rush the process. If it takes you years to settle on a worship center, that is okay. Take your time and wait until you feel confident in your decision.
